Behind Blue Star

Mountain Lake

Tucked away in Northwest Montana, right on the shores of Flathead Lake and just a scenic drive from Glacier National Park, Blue Star Dachshunds live where most dogs only dream to vacation. Our pups don’t just sniff around the backyard—they thrive in the wild.

We’re out there with our weenies hitting the trails, climbing peaks, biking forest roads, boating the lakes and even skiing powdery slopes. These little legends are the ultimate adventure sidekicks—small enough to ride in a backpack, tough enough to keep up, and always ready to explore. If you're looking for a packable pup with a big spirit, you've found your trail buddy.

ABOUT US

Amber Lastella, Owner

Primary Puppy Wrangler and Breeding Specialist

My love for dogs has been a lifelong journey filled with joy, learning, and growth. I’ve been breeding for over 18 years, beginning with the loyal and intelligent Australian Shepherd. As the years went on, the sweet, spunky personality of the Miniature Dachshund captured my heart—and now, I can’t imagine life without them.

In 2018, I became the co-owner of Martin Dachshunds (currently doing business as MAK Mini Dachsunds), where I had the opportunity to grow in the breed and share my love for these special little dogs. In 2022, I made the difficult decision to part ways with Martin Dachshunds due to differences in breeding ethics. It was a turning point for me—one that led to something even better.

That same year, I started my own path with a renewed sense of purpose, teaming up with a wonderful co-breeder who shares my deep commitment to raising healthy, well-socialized dachshund puppies with love, care, and intention. Together, we’ve set our sights on higher standards—prioritizing temperament, health, structure, and the kind of early nurturing that helps each puppy thrive in their forever home.

Our dogs are family. They live in our home, sleep by our feet, and are loved beyond words. Every puppy we raise is special to us, and it’s truly an honor to help them take their first steps into a lifetime of companionship and love.

About Us

Shannon Lowry, Owner

Assistant Puppy Wrangler, Trainer and Rescue Coordinator

Dogs have been at the center of my life for as long as I can remember. I welcomed my first rescue dog when I was just 10 years old, and that experience sparked a lifelong passion for caring for animals—especially those in need of a second chance.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of breeds, including some of the most challenging—wolf mixes, shepherds, rottweilers, huskies and malamutes. That work deepened my understanding of canine behavior, compassion, and the importance of meeting every dog where they are. Supporting rescue efforts has been woven into my life and my heart, both personally and professionally.

In 2022, I met my first Miniature Dachshund—and everything changed. Their big personalities, loyalty, and joyful spirits instantly won me over. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a deep love for the breed and a fascination with how thoughtful, intentional breeding can shape not just appearance, but temperament and connection.

Breeding dachshunds has become the perfect balance of all my passions: honoring strong, healthy bloodlines while also nurturing the soulful, loving nature that makes these little dogs such incredible companions. It’s also given me a place to bring my love for rescue into a breed-specific space, supporting both purpose-driven breeding and ethical care along with working to speerhead community efforts for education and local rescue.

Every dog in our program is a cherished member of the family, and every puppy is raised with love, patience, and purpose. I’m honored to share these wonderful dogs with others—and so grateful to be part of their journey.
